Fred Stevens was born in Boxmeer, Holland in 1958. He came to New Zealand with his parents and his two brothers when they emigrated here in 1963. After living briefly in
Auckland and Hamilton the family eventually settled in Tokoroa . Following his High School education at Tokoroa High Fred left to study at Waikato University where he
attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Sciences. He then went on to complete the first professional years study towards a Bachelor of Architecture degree at
Auckland University. Subsequently Fred gained employment as a Forest Engineer with N Z F P Forests Limited where he was involved in engineering, soil conservation and
town planning work associated with the company's forests throughout New Zealand . After several years employment Fred completed the second professional years study
towards the Bachelor of Architecture degree at Victoria University in Wellington and was awarded a Bachelor of Building Science. He then left for an extended overseas
working holiday which took him to the United States, South America and Europe, and ultimately to London where undertook design work for with a practice that catered
to wealthy middle - eastern clients with properties in the Hampstead Heath/ Bishop's Avenue area of the city. In 1990 Fred returned to New Zealand to complete his
architecture studies and after a further two years study gained a Bachelor of Architecture degree with Honours from Victoria University in Wellington.
In 1985 Fred purchased a property at Lake Tarawera near Rotorua and began what has been a 20 year journey of design and construction that has resulted in the
creation of a unique award-winning home. Construction is on-going today with the addition of three bedroom units together with a guest house, gymnasium and sauna.
